Would you get rid of your acne at the expense of putting your brain at risk? A new study is claiming that vitamin B12 (a vitamin that helps lower your chances of getting dementia) may be a cause for acne breakouts. Scientists at UCLA found that vitamin B12 may boost acne by disrupting a type of skin bacteria known as ‘Propionibacterium acnes.’ Though the scientists say this is only the beginning of new research, it’s creating a double-edged sword. According to the Mayo Clinic, low vitamin B12 levels can lead to several symptoms including muscle weakness, vision problems, dementia and anemia. B12 deficiency may also cause Alzheimer’s, but more research also needs to be done before a full conclusion can be made. Before experimenting by eliminating B12, try lowering your dairy and carbohydrate consumption first. Both are known to cause acne breakouts. Have you noticed a connection between B12 and breakouts?
