There are a lot of nutritionists out there, but very few have celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore and Channing Tatum, as well as celebrated health and wellness gurus Deepak Chopra and Mehmet Oz, MD (“Dr. Oz”), praising their method—in fact, Kimberly Snyder, CN, may be the only one. Now the certified nutritionist, bestselling author, founder of Glow Bio and contributing expert to LivingHealthy is changing the weight loss game with her new book, The Beauty Detox Power. Focusing on self-nourishment and healing, Snyder reveals why (in addition to diet and exercise) aligning the body and mind is the real secret to weight loss success.
While her first two books, The Beauty Detox Solution and The Beauty Detox Foods, deal primarily with diet and nutrition (with her popular Glowing Green Smoothie as a pillar for healthy eating), Snyder’s third tome tackles the mind-body connection and why negativity (thoughts, self-image and emotions) can sabotage even the strictest diet.
Celebrities like Fergie and Chris Hemsworth count on Snyder to keep their diets on track, but Snyder reveals that she wasn’t always a vision of health and wellness, sharing a story from her own life as an example of how negative feelings can trigger unhealthy eating habits: As an anxious and lonely teenager, Snyder found comfort in bags of Rold Gold pretzels, which didn’t seem very bad to her, considering they were fat-free and low in calories.
Her tumultuous 10-year long addiction to the salty, gluten-packed snack food resulted in acne, bloating and constipation, but it wasn’t until she found peace within herself that she was willing to give up the addiction. In her twenties, Snyder embarked on a trip around the world, leaving home with extreme fear and stress (not about the trip, but about her uncertain future). Little did she know that this journey she was on was just as much emotional as it was experiential, and by the time she made it to Thailand she had an epiphany.
“I recognized that this pressure, which I thought was being exerted on me from the outside, was in reality self-imposed, and I had the power to be rid of it,” explains Snyder about her moment of clarity and how she began to “heal the binging.”
While the teenage Snyder ate pretzels as a method of self-soothing—hoping to squelch anxiety and loneliness with every crunch—she now credits her daily meditation and yoga practice for helping her stay positive. “I started living in the moment and not worrying about the future. I was free,” she adds.
Once Snyder stopped counting calories and chose to eat healthy food to nourish her body (instead of as a restriction), she noticed big changes in her mood, weight, and appearance. She believes that a healthy mindset promotes healthy digestion and in turn, weight loss. “You may have heard the gut referred to as the ‘second brain’ given how closely the two interact, but you may not realize that repeated emotions and thoughts, both conscious and subconscious, affect the workings of your gut and digestion and can cause you to hold on to excess weight,” she explains.
This goes hand-in-hand with another interesting concept Snyder introduces in The Beauty Detox Power: Not only is it the natural and physical quality of fat to “insulate and protect,” but fat also “can appear as the physical manifestation of the protection you’re seeking” from “fear, insecurity, uncertainty, imbalance, hurt or abuse.” According to Snyder, unwanted weight gain and weight fluctuation will not subside unless we release all of our unhealthy emotional baggage.
Divided into 6 sections, which Snyder calls “Power Alignment Shifts”—Discover Your True Power, Create the Body and Life You Want, Transform Your Cravings, Understand the Chakras and How They Relate to Your Body, Practical Power Practices and Beauty Detox Power Recipes—the 350-page beauty bible is packed with tips, affirmations and personal stories from her clients, inspiring quotes from her own gurus, as well as data and studies that back up the belief that being your healthiest you is more about self-love than doing everything right on the checklist.
While diet and exercise are clearly a big part of the weight loss equation, the traditionally overlooked “mind and body” component that Snyder tackles in The Beauty Detox Power is a must-read for anyone who has ever struggled with weight issues—and it’s a lot cheaper than years of therapy.
