Actress Ariel Winter, who plays quirky teen Alex Dunphy on ABC’s ‘Modern Family,’ went public this week about her recent breast reduction surgery. The 5’1” 17-year-old wore a size 32F bra before the operation but she is just one of many women who go through the procedure each year—Breast reductions surgeries increased 157 percent between 1997 and 2013, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Winter, like many other women who elect to have the operation, cites improved self-esteem and less back pain as its benefits. But in an interview with Glamour magazine, she also mentions the emotional pain caused by fat-shaming online bullies as motivation for the change, explaining that her large breasts used to make her look overweight in photos. “It’s something that I did to better my life and better my health and I think that that can benefit a lot of young girls,” said Winter in the magazine interview. “I have felt more happy with myself than I ever have.”
If you think breast reduction surgery can improve your physical and emotional well being, go for it, but first you should consult with your family or physician before deciding if the procedure is right for you.
