Sofia Vergara recently flaunted her “best body ever” at 42 on the cover of Shape, admitting to the fitness magazine that, for the first time in her life, she actually had to work for it.  “Everyone knows that I’ve never been into working out. I was always very happy with what I have,” the famously curvy star admitted. “Then I hit 40 and I started seeing a softness everywhere on my body. I knew it was time to do something, so I did.”  A little over a year ago, the Modern Family star enlisted the help of Jennifer Yates, Lagree Fitness master trainer, who toned up the Modern Family’s famous figure with a tailored workout. 

“Sofia is driven so she works extremely hard during our training sessions together,” Yates, who works out with Sofia as many times a week as her celebrity client’s schedule permits, explains.  “She keeps a balanced lifestyle and is committed to staying healthy.”

The trainer, who opened her own studio, Studio Metamorphosis in Pasadena, CA, in 2014, reveals that Sofia’s workouts focus on total body conditioning, with more emphasis placed on upper body during award show season.

Every training session together we use the Megaformer, a type of fitness equipment that uses spring tension, however lately we have been incorporating training with heavier free weights and kettlebells.  The Megaformer leans and lengthens the muscles by using slow controlled tension. Using the positive and negative return of the spring tension stimulates the slow-twitch muscle fibers in the body. The free weights and kettlebells help fuel the muscles even further to reach complete muscle stimulation. Muscle stimulation is that quivering and shaking feeling that happens to muscles, which is necessary to really change one’s body composition.”

Instead of adding cardio to Sofia’s routine, Yates incorporates it into their sessions. “I have designed her training sessions on the Megaformer and with free weights to have no rest time in between the exercises so Sofia’s heart rate will stay elevated and she will get some cardiovascular work in as well as strength training,” she explains.

While on location or traveling, the actress stays on top of her workout routine by using weights and doing leg and abdominal exercises that mimic the routine she does with Yates on the Megaformer.

Though famous for her perfectly pert backside, Sofia isn’t always thrilled with a certain flat-blasting, compound exercise.  “I believe Sofia has a love/hate relationship with squats!” Yates reveals.
