According to the Migraine Research Foundation, of the more than 36 million Americans who suffer from migraine headaches, 27 million are women. That’s right—the affliction is three times as prevalent in women as it is in men. So how do you know if your headache is a migraine?

Generally speaking, migraines are usually accompanied by a cluster of other symptoms, including visual changes, nausea, vomiting or extreme sensitivity to light and noise. Migraines are also more likely to show up on just one side of the head and are often triggered by hormones.


Teshamae Monteith, M.D., an assistant professor of clinical neurology and director of the headache program at the University of Miami Health System says migraines are often undertreated and can also greatly affect how you work. “There's one group of people that are missing work and there are the other people who are there, but in a sense they're not there because they're not functioning to the full capacity,” says Dr. Monteith.
