When you’re running a marathon (or even just a three-miler), getting through it can often become a mind-over-matter struggle. As one writer who ran her first marathon shares, finding the mental fortitude to get to the finish line was as rigorous as the physical training itself.
A few mental tricks that worked for her: Have ‘mini mental victories’ (which happen when you complete every training session you set out to do); leave no room for negative thoughts (the weather conditions might be less than ideal, but focusing on how sharp that wind is won’t help your stamina); and designate ‘thought topics’ for each mile (one mile could be about tomorrow’s presentation and the next could be where you’d like to take your next vacation).
