Good news can come in the form of a blood test. Blood testing can now be used to detect cancer earlier than usual and determine the effectiveness of treatment sooner—potentially eliminating the entire cancer biopsy process. In fact, the National Cancer Institute’s study published this month says that the blood test detected recurrences in patients who previously had lymphoma about three months sooner than CT scans. Another advantage of conducting a blood test is that the tumor can be monitored frequently whereas biopsies cannot be performed as often. Even though the researchers are quick to note that more evaluations are needed, the oncologists’ excitement over the blood test’s potential can’t be helped. And we take that as a very promising sign, indeed.
