Whether you wanted to play a sport growing up or felt coerced by your three-peat varsity MVP parent, it might have worked out to your advantage either way. New research shows that women who played sports or exercised 80 minutes a week as teenagers have a 16 percent lower risk of death from cancer and a 15 percent lowered risk of death from all health-related causes. The risks plummet even more for women who exercise or play sports into adulthood. Though the study primarily focused on Chinese women, experts say there’s no reason why the findings wouldn’t apply to American women, and to men, as well. If you’re looking to spice up your exercise routine, why not revisit your favorite sport and join an adult league? And encourage any teens you know to do the same.
