Many might think that boxing without contact is like swimming without water. But despite our current cultural fascination with the gory side of the sport (see ‘Southpaw,’ Manny Pacquiao), the newest trend in boxing for fitness is positively pacifistic: no fighting allowed. Owners of a new crop of boxing gyms say they wanted to offer an alternative to the ‘authentic’ old-school bastions of the right hook—more in the mode of Soul Cycle than ‘Rocky’—so they’re offering artisanal coffee, juice bars and hip music. National gym chains are getting in on the trend, too, so check your club’s new class schedule if you’re curious. What do you think of ‘fight lite?’ Should boxing remain true to its combative roots, or evolve into something kinder and gentler? Sound off in the comments.
