When it comes to eating plans for type 2 diabetics, the conventional wisdom has long been to limit simple carbohydrates and increase protein in an effort to control blood sugar. So even though patients had to forego candy and ice cream, they could still have their steak — and eat it, too. But now a new study is recommending those with type 2 diabetes give up meat altogether, especially if they suffer from neuropathy, or nerve pain. Turns out that adopting a vegan diet, which reduces inflammation in the body, helped study participants lose weight, allowed them more mobility, and diminished their pain. Critics of the study say the weight loss alone might be responsible for the pain reduction, but either way, patients are pleased. Have you ever tried a vegan diet? Do you have any recipes to share that might make transitioning off animal protein easier? Sound off in the comments.
