According to Dr. Mark Hyman, the doctor who coined the diet as ‘pegan,’ combining the most beneficial elements of the paleo and vegan diets helps dieters lose weight, lower cholesterol and reduce diabetes risk."You're cutting out dairy. You're cutting out gluten. You're cutting out lots of sugar. You're cutting out all the processed, refined foods,” said Dr. Hyman in an interview with ABC News.
However, if you’re thinking of hopping on the pegan bandwagon, we suggest figuring out an alternative calcium source since the diet discourages dairy.
