If you like being on the pulse of the latest diet trend, chances are you have a leg-up on this one. Meet the ‘pegan’ diet: A hybrid of the vegan and paleo diets, which consists of gluten-free whole grains, fruits and veggies without shunning the meat.

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, the doctor who coined the diet as ‘pegan,’ combining the most beneficial elements of the paleo and vegan diets helps dieters lose weight, lower cholesterol and reduce diabetes risk."You're cutting out dairy. You're cutting out gluten. You're cutting out lots of sugar. You're cutting out all the processed, refined foods,” said Dr. Hyman in an interview with ABC News.

However, if you’re thinking of hopping on the pegan bandwagon, we suggest figuring out an alternative calcium source since the diet discourages dairy.

Consider taking a calcium supplement or filling up on calcium-rich foods (such as dark leafy greens like spinach, kale or collard greens). Have you heard of the pegan diet and are you planning to try it?
