Whether it’s a snide comment from a stranger or an ill-timed surprise visit from the in-laws, bottling up your true feelings might not be the best solution. Scientists are finding that suppressing emotional responses to ‘keep the peace’ can have a negative impact on first impressions as well as on relationships. One recent study in particular found that those who tend to muffle their emotions have less social support and trouble developing close relationships while being characterized as more distant and less agreeable. However, researchers note there may be times when withholding your emotions could behoove a situation (say, if an inappropriate conversation comes up during work).
