Ready to spice up your beauty routine? Turmeric, the ingredient most commonly found in Indian and Moroccan foods, is making its foray into the beauty scene. According to skin care experts, the spice is a logical choice for maintaining healthy, vibrant skin because turmeric has antibacterial properties (a plus for anyone prone to acne) and can help curb our sebaceous glands' secretion of sebum—an oily, waxy substance that often leads to that oily skin we know too well.
"It's a natural anti-inflammatory, which helps everything from acne to aging," said Alexis Wolfer, certified holistic nutritionist and founder of The Beauty Bean to ABC News. "[It] has antibacterial properties, great for acne, and helps control sebum production -- great for oily and acne-prone skin."
Wolfer offers an easy DIY facial mask using turmeric to help soothe your skin. You only need three ingredients: 1 tbsp. of full fat Greek yogurt, 1 tsp. of raw honey and 1 tsp. on turmeric. Wolfer says the turmeric will help calm your inflammation, meanwhile the yogurt will help balance the bacteria while also exfoliating and hydrating your skin. The honey will soothe, calm and kill bacteria on your skin as well. Wolfer’s recipe asks for you to mix the ingredients and let the mask stay on your face for 15 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
Other experts also tout the spice’s ability to tighten skin, which makes it a natural alternative for fending off cellulite as well as helping stimulate and detox the skin.
